2027: Canada-Based AI Specialist Announces Bid for Ogun Governorship
Canada-based Artificial Intelligence expert, Dr. Biodun Ogundipe, has announced his intention to contest the Ogun State governorship election in 2027 under the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Speaking with journalists on Tuesday in Abeokuta, Ogundipe downplayed the prospects of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the upcoming election, asserting that the real contest would be between the ADC and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
“With the PDP’s recent decision to endorse President Bola Tinubu of the APC as its 2027 presidential candidate, it is evident that the party in Ogun has effectively aligned itself with the ruling party,” Ogundipe stated.
He expressed confidence that the ADC, with its “ambitious programmes aimed at liberating Nigerians from APC-imposed suffering and poor governance,” would emerge as the next government in the state.
“My chances are very bright. The governorship race will definitely be between us, the ADC, and the APC, come next year. PDP in Ogun State has endorsed APC already.
“If by the grace of God I get our party’s ticket, I will go to the field and tell the people what they stand to gain if they allow me to lead them,” he said.
Ogundipe, an AI engineer, said youth empowerment through artificial intelligence would be one of his key focus areas if elected.
“I’m an AI expert, and that’s my area of expertise. Many of these technologies reduce the need for human intervention in essential services, yet in Nigeria, we are barely scratching the surface.
“AI can replace jobs, but it can also create value. Take journalism, for example: ChatGPT was developed by OpenAI and faced a lawsuit in Canada for using news content to train the model, resulting in a payout of around $100 million. In Nigeria, our leaders are not advocating for such benefits for the people,” he remarked.
He also criticised the APC-led government in the state, accusing it of failing to strategically position Nigeria for economic growth.
“Many of our leaders lack the vision to generate revenue in foreign currency. Instead, they focus on sealing companies, markets, and garages as a means of raising funds,” he added.
