Ghana sacks Coach Chris Hughton Following Africa Cup of Nations Group Stage Exit

In a post-Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) shake-up, the Ghana Football Association has parted ways with coach Chris Hughton after the national team’s premature exit from the tournament’s group stage.
The Black Stars faced a setback in their AFCON journey, suffering a 2-1 defeat against Cape Verde in their opening match in Ivory Coast. Subsequent draws with Egypt and Mozambique sealed their fate, leading to elimination from Group B on Tuesday. The results of other matches proved decisive in Ghana’s early departure from the competition.
Chris Hughton, renowned for his roles as a former Tottenham defender and manager for Newcastle and Brighton, took the helm as Ghana’s coach in February 2023. However, the Ghana Football Association swiftly announced Hughton’s dismissal in a statement issued late Tuesday.
“The Ghana Football Association wishes to announce that Chris Hughton has been relieved of his duties as head coach of the senior National team with immediate effect,” stated the federation. The Executive Council further decided to dissolve the technical team of the Black Stars.
Anticipating a new direction for the national team, the Ghana Football Association assured that a roadmap outlining the future trajectory of the Black Stars would be provided in the coming days. The decision reflects the commitment to strategic changes in the coaching setup as Ghana looks ahead beyond the AFCON disappointment.
