Schneider Electric Identifies High Tariff as Barrier to Rural Electrification in West Africa

 

Schneider Electric has highlighted the challenge of high tariffs acting as a significant barrier to electricity usage in rural communities across West Africa.

 

The company has expressed its commitment to finding solutions for the adoption of electrification projects in this region, which struggles with access to reliable and affordable energy.

 

Teina Teibowei, Commercial Lead, Microgrid, Power & Grid Business Segment at Schneider Electric, emphasized the inhibiting effect of high tariffs on electricity use in rural areas. She pointed out that in communities with limited economic opportunities, even basic lighting can be prohibitively expensive, discouraging widespread adoption of electrification projects.

 

Teibowei stated, “This reality is further compounded by the low energy consumption patterns in these communities, characterized by single lights and sockets in homes.” Recognizing these challenges, Schneider Electric aims to address affordability concerns, create economic opportunities, and foster a culture of energy consumption to unlock the true potential of rural electrification in West Africa.

 

Ajibola Akindele, the Country President of Schneider Electric West Africa, highlighted the importance of overcoming affordability concerns and creating economic opportunities to empower communities in the region. By doing so, the company aims to drive the successful implementation of rural electrification projects.

 

This statement follows the recent acknowledgment by the Nigerian Minister for Power, Adebayo Adelabu, who indicated that the Federal Government might no longer be able to sustain electricity subsidies. As discussions around energy affordability continue, Schneider Electric’s commitment to addressing these challenges becomes crucial for the advancement of rural electrification initiatives in West Africa.
