AS Monaco Secures Deal for Nigerian Prodigy George Ilenikhena
Ligue 1 powerhouse AS Monaco has successfully negotiated a deal to acquire 17-year-old Nigerian forward George Ilenikhena from Belgian club Royal Antwerp. The transfer, valued at approximately €20 million, is expected to be finalized this week, according to renowned transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.
Romano announced the agreement on X, stating that Ilenikhena has already settled personal terms with Monaco and is set to undergo medical examinations shortly. This move marks a significant step in the young forward’s career, following a breakout season in Belgium.
Last season, Ilenikhena made 37 appearances in the Belgian Pro League, netting seven goals. He also impressed on the European stage, scoring once in six UEFA Champions League matches for Antwerp. His performances have caught the attention of top clubs across Europe, but Monaco has secured his signature.
Born in Lagos, Nigeria, Ilenikhena moved to France at the age of three, growing up in Antony, Hauts-de-Seine. He began his football journey at Antony Football Evolution before joining Amiens SC in the 2021–22 season. During his time with Amiens, he scored 24 goals for the under-17 team and participated in the Coupe Gambardella, which significantly raised his profile.
Ilenikhena made his professional debut for Amiens on November 19, 2022, in a resounding 10–0 Coupe de France victory against Aiglon du Lamentin. He joined Royal Antwerp on June 29, 2023, for a reported fee of €6 million and quickly made his mark. On October 11, 2023, he was recognized by The Guardian as one of the best players born in 2006 worldwide. Later that year, on December 13, he scored his first Champions League goal in a dramatic 3–2 win over Barcelona, a historic moment for Antwerp.
Internationally, Ilenikhena has represented France at the youth level, first being selected for the Under-16 team in the summer of 2021. His rapid ascent in European football highlights his potential and the high expectations surrounding his move to Monaco.
