Government pledges to settle overdue N77,000 NYSC allowance payments.
The Federal Government has pledged to clear the backlog of the newly announced monthly allowance for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members, recently set at N77,000. This increase, which raised the allowance from N33,000, was announced in September 2024 but has yet to be implemented, leaving corps members uncertain about when they will receive the enhanced payment.
During a recent interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, confirmed that both current corps members and those who served when the increase was announced will receive backdated payments. However, Olawande cautioned that while the government is committed to settling the overdue payments, the process may take some time.
“We will work on the backlog and ensure it is settled,” Olawande stated. “It may not happen immediately, but it will occur.”
His comments come in response to earlier assurances from NYSC Director General, Olakunle Nafiu, who had informed corps members to anticipate the payment in March. Olawande further explained that the delays were due to budgetary constraints.
The initial excitement surrounding the allowance increase was rooted in its alignment with the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024. However, the prolonged wait has led to frustration among both current and former corps members. Despite the ongoing delays, the government’s recent commitments provide a glimmer of hope that the situation will soon be rectified, allowing corps members to receive the promised allowance.
