President Bola Tinubu, alongside several past Nigerian leaders, is expected to be in Daura today for the burial of former President Muhammadu Buhari, in line with Islamic funeral rites.

Vice President Kashim Shettima, acting on President Tinubu’s directive, accompanied Buhari’s remains from London, where the former president died at around 4:30 p.m. on Sunday.

Sources within the presidency confirmed that Buhari’s body would arrive in Nigeria early Monday and be transported directly to Daura, his hometown in Katsina State, for immediate interment.

“The burial is taking place tomorrow (Monday). His remains are being brought in overnight and will be taken straight to Daura,” one official disclosed. “You know, Islamic rites don’t take much time,” another added, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Another source explained, “Once the body arrives, the President is expected to join the burial in Daura.”

Regarding international condolences, a separate official noted that several West African leaders are expected to visit Nigeria. “We expect some West African heads of state, but the specific names will become clearer once communication begins on Monday,” the source said.

He added, “When they arrive, they’ll likely check into their hotels and wait for a scheduled time to meet with the President. You know, the President just returned to the country earlier today and is currently resting.”

President Tinubu earlier confirmed the passing of his predecessor, who died after a prolonged, undisclosed illness.

According to a statement released by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu spoke with former First Lady Aisha Buhari to express his condolences.

The statement, titled ‘President Tinubu Announces President Buhari’s Passing, Orders VP Shettima to the UK to Accompany Body Back Home’, revealed that Tinubu directed Vice President Shettima to immediately travel to the United Kingdom and accompany Buhari’s remains back to Nigeria.

As a mark of respect, the President also ordered all national flags to be flown at half-staff for seven days and summoned an emergency session of the Federal Executive Council, scheduled for Tuesday, July 15, 2025, in Buhari’s honour.

In a heartfelt tribute personally signed on Sunday evening, Tinubu confirmed that the late president would be accorded full state honours.
