WAEC denies cancellation of 2025 WASSCE
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has refuted an online report claiming that the recently concluded 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) has been cancelled.
In a statement released on Sunday, the Acting Head of Public Affairs at WAEC, Moyosola Adesina, clarified that the examination has not been cancelled and described the circulating press release as false and not originating from the council.
WAEC noted that while the origin of the misleading information, which began circulating on Saturday, July 19, 2025, remains unknown, it believes the false claim is the work of mischief-makers attempting to tarnish the council’s image.
“The attention of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Nigeria, has been drawn to a press statement alleging the cancellation of all the papers written during the just concluded WASSCE for School Candidates, 2025,” the statement read.
According to the press statement dated Saturday, July 19th, 2025, being circulated on social media platforms, the Federal Ministry of Education, in collaboration with WAEC, had cancelled the said examination due to widespread examination malpractice, coordinated leakage of question papers, and unauthorised digital dissemination of exam materials.
“The WAEC management would like to state unequivocally that the spurious press statement being circulated did not emanate from the council.
The said examination has not been cancelled. Though the source of that information cannot be ascertained, the council is certain that the false claim is being peddled by mischief-makers who are bent on bringing the council to disrepute to cause confusion and panic among candidates who sat the examination.
In fact, WAEC confirmed that the marking of scripts for the said examination has just been completed, and the results are expected to be released on or before Monday, August 4, 2025.
The council also emphasized that all official information is shared exclusively through its verified social media channels and accredited media outlets across the country.
“Similarly, all official press statements are issued and signed by the Public Affairs Department on behalf of the Head of National Office,” the statement added.
WAEC therefore urged its stakeholders and the general public to disregard the false publication.
