Former Liverpool and Barcelona star Javier Mascherano has openly criticized Major League Soccer’s handling of the suspension imposed on his superstar teammate, Lionel Messi.
The 38-year-old Messi was notably absent during the Herons’ goalless draw against FC Cincinnati in the MLS on Saturday, a decision that sparked controversy among fans and insiders alike.
Speaking to reporters at Chase Stadium after the match, Mascherano expressed his frustration with the league’s management, questioning the timing and consistency of the suspension. The MLS commissioner had announced Messi’s suspension just 24 hours before the game, leaving many puzzled.
“I typically avoid commenting on decisions made by others, but it’s hard to ignore when one statement is made one day, only to be contradicted the next,” Mascherano remarked.
He went on to highlight the significance of Messi’s presence for the league, pointing out the apparent contradiction in how the star player is treated. “Messi has played an enormous number of matches. When it comes to selling tickets or filling stadiums, nobody raises any issues. But now, for our home game, he’s suddenly suspended? Would the same have happened if we were playing away? It’s frustrating,” Mascherano added, speaking through GOAL.
The suspension stems from Messi and his former Barcelona teammate Jordi Alba’s decision to skip the MLS All-Star match last week, despite being named in the squad. Following league rules, both players were handed a one-game suspension as a disciplinary measure.
