Brown Ideye Denies Urging Jail for Financially Struggling Retirees, Calls Reports “Fabrications”
Former Super Eagles striker Brown Ideye has publicly refuted claims that he suggested imprisoning retired footballers who face financial hardship. The 2013 Africa Cup of Nations champion, who recently participated in an online discussion, says his remarks were misrepresented and then widely circulated, provoking backlash from fans and commentators.
In a statement titled “Setting the Record Straight,” the 34-year-old former West Bromwich Albion forward insisted the allegations are entirely false. “Let me be clear: these statements are completely untrue and misrepresent my views,” Ideye said.
Far from advocating punishment, Ideye emphasizes that his focus has always been on supporting athletes as they transition out of professional sports. “I would never suggest punitive action against anyone struggling financially or otherwise,” he asserted. “What we need is comprehensive support—resources, training and mentorship programs—to help players navigate life after football.”
He also called for more empathy in discussions around ex-players’ welfare. “These issues demand understanding and practical solutions, not condemnation,” he said.
Describing the reports as damaging both personally and professionally, Ideye urged the media to stop propagating baseless claims. “This article misleads about my character, and I strongly condemn it. I ask the public to disregard these rumors and the press to refrain from spreading false stories that only sow discord.”
