Strike: Polytechnic workers issue ultimatum to FG over unmet demands

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Polytechnics (SSANIP) has issued a fresh strike ultimatum to the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, granting an extension to allow the government more time to address their demands.

The union had earlier given a 21-day ultimatum, which lapsed on September 17, 2025. However, with no progress made, SSANIP expressed disappointment and served another notice in a bid to prevent an industrial dispute.

In the letter, the union’s president, Nura Gaya, explained that the decision was taken to give the government an additional opportunity to respond to their concerns.

“We refer to our 21-day ultimatum issued on 27th August 2025, which expired on 17th September 2025, without any concrete response from Government to the critical issues raised by our Union.

“In line with the provisions of extant labour laws, and as a demonstration of our commitment to industrial peace, the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Polytechnics hereby issues a further 14-day ultimatum effective from the date of this letter.

“Our unresolved demands, as earlier communicated, are as follows: Release of the New Schemes and Conditions of Service for the Polytechnic Sector; Constitution of the Renegotiation Committee for the 2010 Agreement; Release of the 2023, 2024, and 2025 NEEDS Assessment Funds; Payment of Arrears.

“This additional period further avails the government the opportunity to positively and conclusively address the issues raised as our members have over the period showed remarkable understanding even to their detriment.

“We once again urge the government to act responsibly to avert this avoidable disruption of the polytechnic sector.”

The spokesperson of the Ministry of Education, Folasade Boriowo, said the ministry was working assiduously to ensure that all demands were met.
