NiMet Predicts Three Days of Thunderstorms and Rain Across Nigeria.
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a forecast for a three-day period of thunderstorms and rainfall across Nigeria, spanning from Monday to Wednesday. The agency’s outlook, released on Sunday in Abuja, predicts that northern states—including Jigawa, Zamfara, Kano, Kaduna, Bauchi, Yobe, and Katsina—will experience thunderstorms with moderate rainfall starting Monday morning. Later in the day, Kebbi, Adamawa, and Taraba are also expected to receive rains.
NiMet warns that flash floods could occur in Bauchi, Jigawa, Katsina, Kaduna, and Kano during this period. The central states—comprising Niger, Benue, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Plateau, and Nasarawa—are forecasted to see morning cloud cover with light to moderate rainfall, with a high risk of flooding particularly in Plateau State.In the southern regions, light to moderate rains are anticipated in states such as Ondo, Imo, Abia, Enugu, Ebonyi, Anambra, Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom. The weather pattern for Tuesday suggests sunny skies with patchy clouds over the north, although thunderstorms and rains will persist in parts of Adamawa, Taraba, and neighboring areas.
By Wednesday, NiMet predicts sunny mornings with thunderstorms across northern Nigeria, while central regions will experience continued cloudiness and moderate rainfall. The southern states, including Ebonyi, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Cross River, are expected to see morning showers followed by moderate to heavy rains later in the day.The agency advises residents in flood-prone zones to activate emergency measures, avoid driving during heavy rains, secure loose objects, and be cautious of strong winds and low nighttime temperatures. It also urges the public to disconnect electrical appliances during storms and avoid sheltering under tall trees to prevent accidents.
