Abia Authorities Seal Off Site as Investigation Begins into Aba Building Incident.

The Abia State government has clarified reports regarding the collapse of a section of a building within Ekeoha Market, Aba, on Tuesday. Contrary to earlier media claims suggesting that there were fatalities, the government confirmed that there were no deaths or injuries resulting from the incident.

The government attributed the earlier reports to preliminary findings and assured the public that safety measures were promptly taken. To ascertain the true cause of the incident, an independent investigation committee has been established. The committee is led by Engineer Felix Nnabugwu and includes members from the Nigeria Society of Engineers, the Nigerian Institute of Builders, and the Nigerian Institute of Architects.

Uche Ukeje, the Director General of the Greater Aba Development Authority (GADA), which oversees development in the Aba region, announced that the investigation aims to determine the root causes and assess the extent of the collapse. He emphasized that the committee’s initial findings indicate that the incident was not a structural collapse and that no fatalities occurred. “Following the committee’s preliminary visit to the site, the chairman, Engr. Felix Nnabugwu, confirmed that there was no structural failure and no reports of loss of life,” Ukeje stated.

The government has sealed off the affected site to prevent further incidents and ensure safety. Ukeje assured residents and stakeholders that the investigation will be thorough and transparent, with a detailed report expected within two weeks. The aim is to identify the specific factors that led to the incident and provide recommendations to prevent future occurrences.
