Minaj, whose real name is Onika Maraj-Petty, will be joined by prominent figures, including U.S. Ambassador to the UN Michael Waltz and President Donald Trump’s advisor Alex Bruesewit, who is serving as the event’s convener. The announcement was made by Time senior political correspondent Eric Cortellessa via X (formerly Twitter) late Sunday.
Ambassador Waltz praised Minaj, describing her as “arguably the greatest female recording artist,” and commended her for using her platform to highlight human rights issues. “She refuses to remain silent in the face of injustice,” Waltz said, expressing gratitude for her willingness to speak out on the plight of Christians in Nigeria.
In response, Minaj expressed her appreciation, stating, “I am grateful to be entrusted with an opportunity of this magnitude. I do not take it for granted,” adding that her influence is meant for a higher purpose aligned with her faith and principles.
The upcoming UN event comes amid heightened tensions over Nigeria’s religious conflicts. Recently, U.S. President Donald Trump labeled Nigeria a “Country of Particular Concern” due to alleged ongoing Christian persecution and called for Congress to take immediate action. While the Nigerian government denies reports of religious violence, insisting that insecurity is not driven by religion, the U.S. remains committed to addressing the issue.
