OPay Labels Viral Post as Malicious, Warns of Legal Consequences for Spreaders.

In a swift response to a viral social media post, leading fintech company OPay Digital Services has dismissed claims that it would cease operations from September 1, 2026. The false publication, which circulated widely across various social media platforms on Sunday, falsely advised customers to withdraw or transfer their funds in anticipation of an alleged prolonged shutdown.

OPay, in a statement issued via its verified social media channels, categorically rejected the rumours, emphasizing that the company remains fully operational and committed to serving its customers. Titled “This is FALSE!”, the statement read, “OPay is not going on break by September. We’re here, and we’re going nowhere! 💚”

The fintech firm further urged its users and the public to scrutinize such viral claims carefully. It pointed out that there are obvious inconsistencies in the false post, which can help users identify it as fake. “True OPay users know how to identify our official communications. Take a closer look at the viral post and you’ll spot the red flags. Always verify before you share. Filter the noise! Follow our official pages for authentic OPay updates,” the statement advised, using the hashtag #OPayIsOkay.

Reacting separately, OPay’s Vice President for Public and Government Affairs, Dr. Maxwell Loko, described the circulating post as “false, malicious and misleading.” He warned customers against making any financial decisions based on the fabricated information, emphasizing that the company has no plans to shut down its operations.

“This post is false, malicious and misleading. OPay is not shutting down, and customers should not be misled into withdrawing their funds based on fabricated information,” Loko said. He also urged the public to disregard the fake publication and rely solely on the company’s verified communication channels for official updates.

Loko further warned that deliberately spreading false information capable of causing panic or undermining confidence in a financial institution could have serious legal repercussions. “The deliberate spread of false information designed to cause panic or undermine confidence in a financial institution is a serious matter and may have legal consequences,” he stressed.

This incident comes amid increasing concerns over the circulation of fake digital content targeting businesses and financial institutions. Such misinformation can lead to unnecessary panic and influence customers’ financial decisions negatively. While some speculate that the fake post may have been motivated by competitive interests seeking to undermine OPay’s market position, no concrete evidence has yet linked any individual or organization to the act.

OPay has reiterated the importance of verifying information through its official platforms before taking any action. The company’s clarification effectively dispels the false claim that it plans to shut down or suspend operations from September 1, 2026, reaffirming that its services remain accessible to all customers.
