Family Urges Independent, Transparent Probe into Mohbad’s Death.

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has approved the family’s request for a fresh investigation into the death of singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad.

The family’s lawyer, Oladayo Ogungbe, said the petition was submitted to the IGP on April 14, 2026, and received at Force Headquarters in Abuja on May 7. In a statement dated September 29, he said the petition raised concerns about inconsistencies in the earlier investigation and called for a comprehensive forensic reconstruction of the circumstances surrounding the singer’s death.

According to Ogungbe, the IGP approved the petition and forwarded it to the Lagos State Police Command for action. The family was later informed that the case had been assigned to officers of the Special Enquiry Bureau. Its representative has met with the new investigators, and the family says it remains in contact with them.

The lawyer’s statement was issued after the Federal High Court in Abuja dismissed Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/363/2026 on September 25. Ogungbe said the suit was separate from the family’s petition and was neither filed by the Aloba family nor authorised by it.

The family cautioned against linking the court’s decision to the police inquiry, emphasising that the dismissal did not end the investigation being conducted following its petition.

“The Aloba Family therefore does not wish the public to conflate the dismissal of that suit with the separate investigative process already commenced pursuant to the Family’s petition to the Inspector-General of Police,” the statement said.

The family said it would continue to cooperate with investigators by providing information, documents, witnesses and other relevant materials. It also urged the police to conduct the inquiry diligently, independently and professionally, and to examine all relevant people and circumstances.

Ogungbe said the family was not seeking to prejudge the investigation or encourage “trial by media.” Instead, it wants a credible, comprehensive and transparent process that can establish the facts surrounding Mohbad’s death.

“The re-investigation is ongoing. The Aloba Family remains fully engaged. The pursuit of justice for Mohbad continues,” the statement concluded.

Mohbad, a Nigerian Afrobeats singer, died in September 2023. His death prompted public calls for answers and investigations into the events surrounding it. The family’s latest statement confirms that its request for a fresh police probe is proceeding independently of the dismissed court case.
