ADJ REAFFIRMS COMMITMENT TO GIRL-CHILD PROTECTION, CALLS FOR END TO CHILD MARRIAGE.

Hon. Motunrayo Adijat Adeleye (ADJ) has renewed her commitment to the welfare and advancement of women and children, urging families, government and communities to work together to end child marriage and protect every girl’s rights, education and future.
Adeleye made the call as a guest speaker at the International Day of the Girl Child commemoration at the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development in Abeokuta. The event brought together government officials and the Ministry’s management team.
Speaking on the theme, “End Child Marriage: Invest in Girls’ Rights,” she warned that child marriage, abuse, discrimination and other harmful practices threaten girls’ wellbeing and opportunities. She urged girls to value their education, develop their talents, understand their rights and pursue their ambitions with confidence and determination.
Adeleye said protecting and empowering girls is a shared responsibility involving parents, schools, government, community leaders and other stakeholders. She called for safe and supportive environments where girls are valued and able to reach their potential.
Rihanat Jimoh shares her journey :A highlight of the event was the appearance of Rihanat Jimoh, an Ogun State native making her mark in the movie industry. Her story and words of encouragement offered students an example of how passion, commitment and perseverance can lead to new opportunities.
The programme also included a quiz competition that tested students’ knowledge and showcased their preparation and competitive spirit. Aniefiok Faith of Iganmode Grammar School, Ota, took first place. Olutayo Olayemi of De-Dames College came second, while Adeleye Esther of Oke-Ore Grammar School placed third.
Adeleye congratulated the winners and praised all participants for their performances. She said their achievements demonstrated what girls can accomplish when they receive the necessary opportunities, support and encouragement.
Reflecting on her return to the Ministry, Adeleye described the occasion as a reconnection with a cause central to her public service journey.
“My experience in women and children’s affairs has continually reinforced my belief that empowering the girl child today is one of the surest ways to build stronger families, progressive communities and a more prosperous society,” she said.
Her participation highlighted the importance of protecting girls’ fundamental rights and investing in their education and opportunities. Adeleye stressed that such efforts should extend beyond annual commemorations, becoming a sustained commitment by families, institutions, communities and government.
By confronting child marriage, supporting girls’ education and nurturing their potential, she said, society can help ensure girls are not held back by harmful practices but are empowered to achieve their aspirations and contribute to positive change.
