Abiodun Constitutes Committee for Establishment of Naval Base in Ogun
Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has formed an Evaluation Committee to establish a Naval Base in the state. Abiodun expressed delight in the Chief of Naval Staff’s enthusiasm for setting up the team and emphasized the importance of having a feasible presence of the Nigerian Navy before implementing water transportation in the Multi-modal Transportation Master Plan. He assured that the benefits would be mutual and that competent individuals from the state would complement the committee.
Abiodun also mentioned that the state had long desired a dry port and airport, but his administration succeeded in building one. The governor also mentioned that the seaport, which has been in the drawing board for a long time, would also see the light of day.
Although operations at Gateway Agro-Cargo International Airport have not yet started, many institutions and corporate bodies have indicated interest to take over and run it in line with global best practices.
Abiodun reiterated discussions with the Benin Republic President about the feasibility of establishing a Naval Base on Tongeji Island, assuring that the Beninoise have been cooperating on issues that would bring development to both countries. He appreciated the Navy for cooperating and collaborating with other security agencies to keep peace in the state and expressed the need to beef security due to a slight increase in crime rates.
Rear Admiral M. Oamen thanked the state government for the support the Navy has received in the past 25 years and expressed commitment to the success of the project.
