Abiodun expresses confidence in a peaceful and orderly selection of the Awujale
Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, on Monday held a meeting with the Awujale Chiefs-in-Council, expressing confidence that the selection of the next Awujale of Ijebuland would be conducted fairly and peacefully.
The throne fell vacant following the death of Oba Sikiru Adetona on July 13, 2025, at the age of 91, after a reign spanning more than 65 years.
Speaking after the meeting in Iperu, Governor Abiodun stressed the importance of promptly installing a new monarch, stating that “nature abhors a vacuum.” He assured that his administration would lend its full support to the candidate chosen by the kingmakers at the conclusion of the selection process.
“Nature abhors a vacuum, and the process of installing another Awujale has started. That was also what we discussed.
“The pathway to having in place a regency is the pathway to ensuring that all the i’s are dotted and t’s crossed, and that all the processes enshrined in the Laws of Ijebuland are strictly followed.
“I must say that all of us agreed that we are on the same page, and I think this will put paid to all the rumours that have been agog about one thing or another,” the governor stated.
Abiodun expressed confidence that the process would be rancour-free, stressing that all contenders for the exalted stool would be given equal opportunity.
Governor Abiodun praised the members of the Awujale Council as distinguished individuals who contributed to the late monarch’s successful reign by upholding peace in the region.
He also addressed the reason for the delay in convening the meeting with the Chiefs-in-Council.
“I had to wait for the 40-day mourning period to conclude before calling this meeting, as we have all been in mourning. What matters most is that these are deeply committed and dedicated chiefs of the Awujale, and I truly appreciate them.
“This is my first meeting with them to offer condolences on the passing of our revered monarch, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, and to reassure them that despite ongoing rumors, I have complete confidence in them. The Council remains united, with no disharmony or pluralisation; they continue to work hand in hand, and I am very pleased with today’s meeting,” he said.
Speaking as well, the Olootu Olowa and Deputy Chairman of the Council, Chief Oluwaranti Lekan Osifeso, reaffirmed the Chiefs-in-Council’s commitment to peace and unity in Ijebuland.
“We will continue to operate as a united body to preserve peace and drive progress in Ijebuland. Our resolve is unwavering, and our duty is to ensure the continued stability of the land,” he stated.
