Achimugu Initiates Hunger Strike While in EFCC Custody
Aisha Achimugu, a notable business executive and socialite, has initiated a “hunger strike” while in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) following her recent arrest by the agency’s operatives.
According to a statement from Achimugu’s legal team, led by Mr. Chikaosolu Ojukwu, SAN, she was apprehended around 5 a.m. at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Achimugu was listed as wanted by the EFCC in March due to allegations of criminal conspiracy and money laundering. A Federal High Court in Abuja, overseen by Justice I.E. Ekwo, had instructed her to appear before the EFCC on Tuesday and return to court on Wednesday.
Ojukwu noted that Achimugu had voluntarily traveled from London to comply with the EFCC’s summons prior to her arrest. Her legal representative had informed the Federal High Court on Monday of her planned visit to the commission.
According to Ojukwu, the visit was intended to address an ongoing investigation into the claims of criminal conspiracy and money laundering involving Achimugu. He stated, “Given the events in court on Monday, our client returned in good faith to honor the EFCC’s invitation, but she was instead arrested at the airport. She has now commenced a hunger strike, viewing herself as a prisoner of conscience. We believe her arrest contradicts the principles of the rule of law.”
NAN attempted to contact EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale for comments on Achimugu’s arrest but was unable to reach him.
Ojukwu further emphasized that Achimugu is a distinguished business figure, serving as the Group Managing Director and CEO of Felak Concept Group, which comprises a consortium of companies in engineering, maritime, oil and gas, and information technology sectors.
