ADC Calls on Tinubu to Declare State of Emergency in Katsina, Zamfara Amid Surge in Killings
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to declare a state of emergency in Katsina and Zamfara states, in response to a recent wave of deadly assaults that have claimed more than 140 lives over the past two months.
In a statement issued by National Publicity Secretary Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the party condemned what it described as “a complete collapse of Nigeria’s security apparatus” under the current administration. The ADC singled out two particularly gruesome attacks: in Malumfashi, Katsina State, where gunmen opened fire on worshippers inside a mosque killing 30 and later set fire to village homes, burning at least 20 residents alive, and in Zamfara, where 47 people were slain, 38 of them executed despite paying ransom demands.
“The sheer brutality of these massacres underscores the failure of our national defence strategy,” the party said, noting that even the Chief of Defence Staff has urged citizens to learn self-defence. “While innocent Nigerians are being slaughtered, the president continues foreign trips for photo opportunities,” the ADC added, accusing President Tinubu of neglecting urgent security needs at home.
The party also criticized governors from the opposition PDP for holding a political meeting in Zamfara shortly after the killings, calling the gathering “a startling display of insensitivity.”
Beyond urging an emergency proclamation, the ADC demanded a full overhaul of Nigeria’s security framework. “Neither the ruling APC nor the chronically weakened PDP cares about ordinary Nigerians—they only care about power,” the statement concluded.
