Afenifere Urges South-West Governors to Equip Amotekun for Effective Security Amid Rising Crimes

Afenifere, the Yoruba socio-political organization, emphasized the pressing need for a distinct approach by South-West governors to address the escalating cases of killings, abductions, and other grave crimes affecting the nation and the South-West region.

During a visit to Governor Biodun Oyebanji of Ekiti State in Ado Ekiti, Afenifere leaders urged the South-West governors to ensure the comprehensive equipping of the Amotekun Corps. The objective is to empower the security outfit to effectively combat criminal activities within the region and safeguard the lives and properties of citizens.

Governor Oyebanji, appreciating the visit from Afenifere leaders, condemned the recent killing of two traditional rulers and the abduction of five school children and teachers from Apostolic Nursery and Primary School, Emure. He assured the group that the perpetrators behind these acts would be apprehended and prosecuted.

Addressing the security concerns, Afenifere stressed the necessity for the Amotekun Corps to possess modern and sophisticated equipment to confront the evolving challenges effectively. The organization urged the South-West governors to cooperate with each other in devising strategies to counter the invasion of criminal elements in the region.

Afenifere leader, during the visit, expressed the broader goal of working for the interest and progress of the Yoruba people, including those in Kwara and Kogi states. Additionally, the organization called on President Bola Tinubu to spearhead the process of implementing true federalism, enabling governors to take decisive control of security matters in their respective states.

Governor Oyebanji acknowledged the legal constraints faced by Amotekun concerning arms and ammunition but affirmed the commitment to finding viable solutions to enhance the security of life and property across the state. He urged Afenifere to foster unity, emphasizing the need for collective efforts to protect the people in the face of emerging challenges.
