Alaafin Completes Final Traditional Rites as Coronation Scheduled for April

The final stage of traditional rites (Oro Ipebi) for the Alaafin-elect, Oba Akeem Owoade I, will take place tonight at the Sango shrine located in Koso, Oyo town.

Bode Durojaiye, the Director of Media and Publicity for the Alaafin of Oyo, shared this information in a statement from Ibadan on Friday.

The announcement revealed that Oba Owoade will be accompanied by members of the traditional council, Oyo Mesi, princes, princesses from various royal families, traditional religious leaders, village heads (Baales), and a group of local residents.

Durojaiye elaborated, “The new royal father will spend the night at the shrine, where he will receive the Sango crown from Baba Mogba early Saturday morning, marking him as the 46th Alaafin of Oyo.”

Following the crowning ceremony, all attendees, including members of the Oyo Mesi, will prostrate before the Alaafin and proclaim “Kabiyesi” in recognition of his new status.

This ceremony serves as a precursor to the official coronation scheduled for April 5, 2025, at the Oliveth Heights open field in Oyo.
