Amnesty International Condemns Continued Detention of Nasarawa Critic Kabiru Dallah.
Amnesty International has strongly condemned the ongoing detention of Kabiru Ibrahim Dallah, calling it illegal and a violation of his right to freedom of expression. Dallah was reportedly arrested for comments perceived as critical of Laraban Shu’aibu Magaji, the Secretary to the Government of Nasarawa State. He has been held for over 40 days at the Lafia Correctional Centre under what Amnesty described as “deplorable conditions,” with no legal justification for his continued detention.
In a statement issued on Monday, Amnesty highlighted that Dallah’s case exemplifies a disturbing trend of repression against young Nigerians who openly express dissent. The organization alleged that authorities are planning to subject him to a “sham trial” based on “baseless charges,” despite repeated bail requests that have been inexplicably denied. Amnesty emphasized that Dallah appears to be persecuted for exercising his constitutional right to free speech.
The rights group warned that such actions promote an atmosphere of fear and silence among critics, especially young people who utilize online platforms to voice their opinions. Amnesty expressed concern over the increasing number of young Nigerians facing threats, arrests, unlawful detention, and harassment for expressing their views, deeming this trend unacceptable.
Amnesty called for Dallah’s immediate and unconditional release, stressing that freedom of expression is a fundamental human right that must be protected. The organization also urged the government to stop abusing its power to suppress dissent, which damages democratic principles and fosters an environment of intimidation.
“The continued detention of Kabiru Dallah is a blatant abuse of power aimed at silencing critics,” Amnesty stated. “His release is urgent, and the ongoing suppression of young Nigerians’ rights to free speech must end immediately.” The group’s stance underscores the importance of safeguarding free expression and holding authorities accountable for unjust detention practices.
