Anthony Joshua Dominates Jake Paul with Sixth-Round KO in Miami
Former heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua delivered a commanding performance on Saturday morning, securing a sixth-round knockout victory over YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul in Miami.
While Paul managed to withstand early pressure and lasted beyond initial expectations, Joshua’s power and ring experience ultimately proved decisive, according to The Athletic.
The turning point came in the fifth round when Joshua landed a sharp uppercut early, prompting Paul to clinch and then drop to the canvas to recover. Paul’s best moment came later in the round when he connected with an overhand right as Joshua advanced.
During that chaotic fifth round, Joshua knocked Paul down twice. The first knockdown appeared to result from accumulated punches rather than a single shot, with Paul taking a knee. The referee, eager to prevent delays, quickly resumed action. Shortly after, Joshua floored Paul again with a right hand, leaving Paul visibly shaken as the round ended.
In the sixth round, Joshua wasted no time. He opened with a combination of a right hand followed by a left hook, then dropped a fatigued Paul with a right hand to the head. Joshua pressed Paul against the ropes, unleashing a barrage of punches before landing a brutal right hand that sent Paul crashing to the canvas. The referee counted him out, marking Joshua’s return to the ring after a 15-month hiatus—his first fight since being knocked out by Daniel Dubois in an IBF heavyweight title bout in September 2024.
Despite the impressive finish, Joshua expressed some dissatisfaction with his overall performance. “It wasn’t the best performance — it wasn’t the best,” he admitted. “My goal was to get Jake Paul, pin him down, and hurt him. That was the focus. It took longer than expected, but the right hand finally delivered.”
He also issued a challenge to fellow former heavyweight champion Tyson Fury. “If Tyson Fury’s serious and wants to stop talking on Twitter, then put on some gloves and fight one of the realest fighters out there. Let’s see if he’s serious with his fists,” Joshua said.
Meanwhile, Paul remained upbeat despite the loss, confirming he sustained a broken jaw in the fight and was taken to hospital afterward. “I think my jaw is broken. That was a tough fight against one of the best. I love this sport, and I’ll be back to chase a world championship,” he stated.
This marks Paul’s second professional defeat. The American, ranked No. 14 at cruiserweight by the WBA, has notable wins against former champions, including a victory over a 58-year-old Mike Tyson on Netflix’s boxing debut in November 2024, and a recent decision over Julio Cesar Chávez Jr. in June. Paul plans to take some time off after six years of intense training and competition.
