ASUU Elects Prof. Chris Piwuna as New President Amid Rising Tensions Over Academic Allowances and Sector Challenges
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has elected Prof. Chris Piwuna, a consultant psychiatrist at the University of Jos Teaching Hospital and the Dean of Student Affairs at the University of Jos, as its new president.
Prof. Piwuna succeeds Victor Osodeke, a Professor of Soil Science from Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State.
The election took place during the Union’s 23rd National Delegates Congress held in Benin on Sunday.
Sources familiar with the matter reported that the contest was primarily between Piwuna and Prof. Adamu Babayo of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi.
His appointment comes amid ongoing debates and concerns over potential industrial action, largely driven by disagreements over the distribution of the recently released Earned Academic Allowances by the Nigerian Federal Government, as well as issues related to brain drain and other challenges facing the education sector.
