Atiku Abubakar Reflects on 2027 Presidential Candidacy as Opposition Coalition Forms
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has expressed uncertainty regarding his potential candidacy for the presidency in the 2027 elections. In a forthcoming interview on the television show “Untold Stories” with Adesuwa Giwa-Osagie, Atiku, who has previously run for president six times, discussed his political future.
His comments follow the recent announcement of a coalition among opposition leaders aimed at challenging the All Progressives Congress (APC) government led by President Bola Tinubu. When questioned about his plans for the next election, Atiku stated, “I don’t know. There has to be, first of all, a viable platform, more than any other time in the political history of this country, particularly since the return of democracy.”
While he left the door open for a potential run in 2027, Atiku emphasized the critical need for Nigeria to have capable leadership in these challenging times. “I have not seen Nigeria in more need of experienced and credible leadership than now,” he remarked. He recalled a similar political scenario in 2014 where he, along with other prominent candidates, aligned behind a single candidate who emerged victorious.
Speculation surrounds Atiku’s potential support for former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi and former Kaduna State governor Mallam Nasir El-Rufai in the upcoming election.
