Benue State Governor Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia has officially received the Torch of Unity from a delegation of the National Sports Commission in preparation for the upcoming 2025 National Sports Festival, set to take place from May 16 to May 30 in Ogun State.

During the ceremony, Gov. Alia emphasized his full support for the state’s athletes, urging them to strive for success and bring home honors.

Representing the governor, Deputy Governor Barr. Sam Ode highlighted the significance of the torch’s presentation as a symbol of unity among sports enthusiasts nationwide, reinforcing the spirit of national cohesion.

Ode praised Gov. Alia as a passionate supporter of sports, noting his innovative contributions to the sector that have spurred infrastructural development. He stressed that under this administration, sports has become an industry in Benue State, inviting investors to explore opportunities in athletic activities.

“We want to emphasize that no previous governor of Benue State has invested in sports development like Governor Alia, particularly in football,” he said. “We are encouraging investors to view sports not just as recreational pursuits but as viable business opportunities. We plan to diversify into other sports such as volleyball, handball, and table tennis to uncover and nurture talent that can represent the state.”

Ode also expressed confidence that the McCarthy Stadium in Makurdi will soon be ready to host home matches for local clubs, while commending the determination of the state-owned football team, Lobi Stars, for their commitment despite the challenges of playing away from home.
