Chibok Girls: 276 Parents Receive N10 Million on 11th Anniversary
The Borno State Government has pledged N10 million and provided food items to the parents of the 276 Chibok girls, who were kidnapped 11 years ago, as part of a commemoration event.
On Monday, a gathering of grieving parents, community leaders, and government officials took place in the Chibok local government area, as announced in a statement shared on the official Facebook page of the state ministry of Information and Internal Security.
In April 2014, Boko Haram insurgents abducted 276 schoolgirls from the Government Girls Secondary School in Chibok. Since then, 189 of them have been rescued, although efforts continue to locate and safely return the remaining girls.
The statement highlighted that 18 of the rescued girls are currently under the care of the Borno State Government, where they are receiving psychosocial support, vocational training, and academic tutorials in preparation for their WAEC examinations.
At this year’s anniversary event, Hon. Zuwaira Gambo, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, represented Governor Professor Babagana Umara Zulum. She delivered a heartfelt message emphasizing the government’s ongoing commitment to the families affected by the abductions.
“We strive to support the families and will continue our efforts until every missing girl is found,” Gambo stated. “The rescued girls are being rehabilitated and given a new chance at life.”
Chibok Executive Chairman Mustapha Modu and Pogu Lawan, a member of the Borno State House of Assembly, expressed gratitude to the state government for its unwavering support over the years. They called for continued efforts to ensure the safe return of every girl and the restoration of peace for the families involved.
