Justice Mojisola Dada of the Special Offences Court sitting in Ikeja, Lagos, has adjourned the trial of Alhaji Usman Abubakar, promoter of the Young Alhaji Foundation, till June 19, 2023. Abubakar is being prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on a five-count charge of obtaining money by false pretense and stealing to the tune of N950 million.
During the proceedings, Abubakar’s counsel informed the court of his application challenging the jurisdiction of the court to entertain the matter. The prosecution, however, urged the court to discountenance it, stating that the application cannot truncate the hearing of the case.
Earlier in the course of proceedings, Abubakar’s defense counsel had raised concerns about documents provided by the prosecution, which he claimed had no evidence of payment as part of procedures for certification of public documents. The trial has been generating interest and discussion, and it is likely that more details will emerge as the case progresses.
