Customs caution Nigerians against improper use of US visas
The Nigeria Customs Service has issued a stern warning to citizens, urging them to refrain from misusing their United States visas, and cautioned that violating U.S. travel regulations could lead to severe consequences.
In a statement released on Tuesday, NCS spokesperson Assistant Comptroller Abdullahi Maiwada highlighted concerns raised by the U.S. government regarding visa misuse by some Nigerian travelers.
“The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) wishes to inform the public about concerns from the United States Government regarding the need for Nigerians to avoid misusing U.S. entry visas by engaging in activities that do not align with the intended purpose of travel and visa classification,” the statement said in part.
The agency also warned that holding a valid U.S. visa does not exempt travelers from continuous scrutiny by American authorities, who reserve the right to revoke visas at any time if the terms are violated.
According to the NCS, offences such as immigration violations, undeclared funds, or transporting prohibited goods could trigger revocation of travel privileges. The agency also reminded travellers to adhere to mandatory cash declaration rules.
“It is pertinent to also note that passengers are encouraged to be law-abiding citizens and be of good conduct within and outside Nigeria.
Intending passengers to the United States should know that whoever commits fraud in any jurisdiction will face legal consequences both under U.S. and Nigerian laws,” it continued.
The Customs Service noted that it is collaborating with the U.S. Mission in Abuja to prevent Nigeria from being added to any expanded list of countries facing visa restrictions.
“The Nigeria Customs Service wishes to reiterate its collaboration with the U.S. Mission in Abuja to ensure Nigeria meets the necessary requirements to prevent being included in an expanded visa ban that would restrict entry for law-abiding Nigerians traveling to the US for legitimate purposes,” the statement concluded.
The agency also urged travelers to be transparent, comply with travel regulations, and uphold a positive image of the country while overseas.
