Ekiti Community Panic as Suspected Bandits Attempt to Cross from Kwara State.
The Ekiti State Security Network Agency, popularly known as Amotekun Corps, has apprehended 16 individuals suspected of being bandits attempting to enter Ekiti from neighboring Kwara State. The arrests occurred in the Oye Local Government Area, following reports of suspicious activity in the area.
According to a statement from Mr. Adeleye, the Director of Information for Amotekun, residents of Gede Farm settlement in Isan-Ekiti raised alarms after noticing a large group of unfamiliar persons moving around with herds of cattle. The community’s panic disrupted normal activities, prompting immediate action from security forces.
In response, the Oye Local Government Command quickly alerted other nearby Amotekun units, leading to the deployment of additional personnel to the scene. A coordinated operation was launched, resulting in the arrest of the suspects. Preliminary investigations suggest that the suspects fled Kwara State due to intensified security crackdowns on banditry and cattle rustling activities.
During interrogation, the suspects reportedly confessed to involvement in cattle rustling, with several stolen animals recovered from them. Items recovered from the suspects included cash, seven Tecno mobile phones, assorted charms, and three identity cards belonging to the Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN). The security operatives also recovered a number of cows believed to have been stolen from residents of Kwara State.
The Amotekun Corps confirmed that the suspects, along with the recovered items, have been transferred to the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the Ekiti State Police Command in Ado-Ekiti for further investigation and legal action. The incident underscores the ongoing efforts by security agencies in Ekiti to combat banditry and cattle rustling, especially along the border areas with Kwara State.
