Empowerment at Ogun Peace Summit: Vocational Tools Distributed Amongst Youths in Remo

The Ogun Peace Summit, currently taking place in Sagamu, Remo, marked a dramatic turn with the distribution of vocational tools to registered participants, emphasizing the crucial role of youth in building a safer and more resilient community.

The event, which commenced on June 4, 2024, continues to garner attention for its focus on security, youth empowerment, and the upholding of fundamental rights.

Project Director Michael Olufemi Sodipo and AIG Olusola Subaru, Special Adviser to the Governor on Security Matters, led the summit alongside dignitaries including Prince Wole Sowole, Mr. Yinka, and esteemed community leaders like the Eleposho of Eposho and the Radanuwa of Idado.

A highlight of the summit was Comrade Yinka Folarin’s presentation from the National Youth Council of Nigeria, where he discussed the fundamental rights of citizens under the 1999 Constitution. “As we have human rights, we also have animal rights and exemplary rights which can’t be denied us,” Folarin emphasized, illustrating that these rights are non-negotiable and central to the nation’s legal framework.

Ola Barnabas captivated the audience with his session on “The Role of Youth in Building a Safer and Resilient Community.” His engaging, straightforward and humorous approach underscored the importance of youth involvement in security measures, fostering a proactive spirit amongst attendees.

The summit also included a dynamic panel session where speakers addressed actionable solutions to security and empowerment challenges identified in the previous day’s discussions. This segment allowed community and youth leaders to share their efforts and pose questions on advancing security and empowerment initiatives.

A significant moment in the summit was the empowerment session, where vocational tools such as sewing machines, hair dryers, and bricklayer equipment were distributed to those who registered on the first day. This initiative aims to promote self-reliance and skill development amongst the youth.

Hon. Dr. Ronke Soyombo, speaking in an interview, highlighted the collaboration with the Peace Initiative Network from the North, aimed at integrating their values of building a safe and resilient community into Sagamu, Remo. She noted the importance of such initiatives in fostering peace and security.
