Federal Government Declares June 12th Public Holiday to Celebrate Democracy Day

The Federal Government has declared June 12th as a public holiday to celebrate Democracy Day. This announcement was made by the Permanent Secretary, the Federal Ministry of Interior, Dr. Oluwatoyin Akinlade. The holiday is to mark this year’s Democracy Day celebration.

Dr. Akinlade congratulated all Nigerians on this occasion and urged them to appreciate the progress that has been made in the country’s democratic journey. She also called on Nigerians and friends of Nigeria to celebrate the milestones covered and look forward to a better future for the country’s democracy.

Nigeria’s democratic journey has encountered both stormy and smooth sails, but the ship of State, its institutions, and most importantly, the Nigerian people have remained steadfast on the tenets of democratic governance. The declaration of June 12th as Democracy Day is significant as it marks the day that the June 12th, 1993 presidential election was annulled, an election widely regarded as the freest and fairest in Nigeria’s history.
