Federal Government Declares Tuesday Public Holiday in Honour of Late President Buhari
The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, a public holiday in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died on Sunday.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the Federal Government, following President Bola Tinubu’s approval.
This declaration is part of the ongoing seven-day national mourning period earlier announced by the President to honour Buhari’s life, service, and legacy.
The former president passed away at the age of 82 at a clinic in London. His death was confirmed in a statement released on Sunday evening by his former Special Adviser, Garba Shehu.
In a statement by the Ministry of Interior’s Permanent Secretary, Magdalene Ajani, Tunji-Ojo described Buhari as a leader who served Nigeria with dedication, and integrity.
He added that the public holiday is meant to offer Nigerians a moment to reflect on the late president’s contributions to the country’s democratic journey and national development.
“In furtherance to the seven days of national mourning declared by President Bola Tinubu, the Federal Government has declared Tuesday, 15 July 2025, as a public holiday in honour of the late former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari.
The public holiday has been declared as a mark of respect for the late President Muhammadu Buhari’s dedicated service to the nation, his role in advancing Nigeria’s democratic journey, and the lasting impact of his leadership on governance and national development.
“President Muhammadu Buhari served Nigeria with unwavering dedication, integrity, and a firm commitment to the unity and progress of our great country. This holiday offers Nigerians a moment to reflect on his life, leadership, and the values he stood for,” the statement read in part.
The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, also urged Nigerians to honour the memory of the former President by promoting peace, patriotism, and unity—principles Buhari strongly believed in and championed.
As previously announced, national flags will continue to fly at half-mast throughout the seven-day mourning period, which began on Sunday, July 13, 2025.
The Federal Government extended its heartfelt condolences to Buhari’s family, the people of Katsina State, and all Nigerians, while offering
prayers for the peaceful repose of his soul.
