Federal Government in Advanced Talks to Reopen Borders with Benin, Niger Republic

The Federal Government has disclosed ongoing negotiations with the governments of Niger and Benin regarding the prospective reopening of shared land borders. Adewale Adeniyi, the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, unveiled this revelation following the inauguration of the National Single Window Project at the Aso Rock Villa, Abuja.

Adeniyi revealed that he recently engaged in discussions with representatives from both neighboring countries to address the underlying issues that led to the border closure and to prevent their recurrence. Notably, the closure of Nigeria’s border with Benin in August 2019, initiated by former President Muhammadu Buhari, significantly disrupted food trade and aimed to bolster domestic food production and combat smuggling. Subsequently, on October 14, all of Nigeria’s borders were sealed for similar reasons.

Highlighting the ongoing diplomatic efforts, Adeniyi emphasized that consultations at high levels were underway, signaling progress and optimism towards a resolution. He reiterated the Customs’ unwavering commitment to ensuring secure borders and operational efficiency, under the guidance of President Bola Tinubu. Adeniyi also commended the President’s initiative in launching the National Single Window Project, underscoring its pivotal role in facilitating border management.

Adeniyi expressed appreciation for President Tinubu’s steadfast commitment and resolute determination in ensuring the successful implementation of the Single Window system. He underscored the system’s significance in promoting coordinated border management and conveyed gratitude for the President’s unwavering support in its implementation.
