FG Launches Zonal Public Hearings for Minimum Wage Review
Revisiting the national minimum wage, the Federal Government of Nigeria is set to conduct Public Hearings across the six geo-political zones of the country.
Mrs. Helen Chukwu, the Head of Press and Public Relations at the Federal Ministry of Finance, announced that the series of hearings would kick off in the South West, with the first event scheduled to take place in Lagos on Thursday, chaired by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun.
The subsequent hearings are planned for Yola (North-East), Kano (North-West), Abuja (North-Central), Uyo (South-South), and Enugu (South-East). Mrs. Chukwu emphasized that these sessions aim to gather insights and recommendations to shape a fair and sustainable minimum wage policy, incorporating perspectives from various stakeholders in each region.
In Lagos, Mr. Edun will be joined by Governor Adeleke Ademola of Osun State, representing state government interests; Omo-Lamai Grace from the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria; and Muhammed Nura from the Nigeria Association of Small and Medium Enterprises, providing employers’ perspectives. The organized labor will be represented by Adeyanju Adewale (NLC) and Shuaibu Afusatu (TUC), alongside the Minister of State, Labour and Employment, Onyejeocha Nkeiruka.
Mrs. Chukwu highlighted that these hearings are crucial for establishing “a fair, sustainable national minimum wage, reflective of our economic realities and aspirations.” The government aims to engage in a comprehensive dialogue, taking into account the diverse viewpoints of employers, employees, and other stakeholders in different regions.
