FG says nationwide consultations inform new curricula
The Federal Government has announced the rollout of the revised Basic and Senior Secondary School Curricula, following wide-ranging consultations with stakeholders nationwide.
In a statement issued Monday in Abuja, the Federal Ministry of Education said the updated curricula were the outcome of extensive engagements that involved all key stakeholders.
The statement, signed by the Ministry’s Director of Press and Public Relations, Folasade Boriowo, explained that the review was carried out by the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council under the Ministry’s supervision.
According to her, the review adopted both competency and outcome-based approaches to strengthen the curricula.
“The reform was not a rushed exercise but a step-by-step and participatory process designed to guarantee inclusivity, national ownership, and international relevance.
“The journey began with a nationwide needs assessment in 12 states to identify gaps in the system.
“It was followed by dialogues across the six geopolitical zones, where learners, teachers, parents, civil society groups, employers, religious and traditional leaders, policymakers, and development partners all contributed their perspectives,” she said.
Boriowo added that stakeholders’ input helped shape the new curricula framework that reflects national policies, development priorities, and the aspirations of society.
According to her, the framework was formally ratified at the 68th National Council on Education meeting held on October 10, 2024.
“The meeting, chaired by the Ministers of Education, also had in attendance Commissioners of Education, SUBEB chairmen, professional bodies, civil society organisations, and development partners, ensuring legitimacy and broad acceptance.
“Curriculum design and development were carried out by subject specialists, teacher educators, industry practitioners, and curriculum experts across the country.
“The work followed four technical stages: content selection and standardisation, drafting, critique and refinement, and final editing,” she added.
Boriowo explained that since the NCE approval, the Ministry had implemented the curricula in phases over the past nine months.
According to her, the process involved piloting in selected schools, teacher orientation, and nationwide training sessions conducted both in-person and online to equip educators for effective classroom delivery.
“The revised curricula adopt a blend of competency- and outcome-based approaches to better prepare learners for present and future challenges. They are tailored to meet Nigeria’s developmental priorities while aligning with international standards,” she explained.
She added that full details of the curricula are available on the NERDC website: www.nerdc.gov.ng, and assured Nigerians that their implementation across schools would remain smooth and consistent.
