Firefighters Respond Swiftly to Gombe Market Blaze Amid Concerns Over Safety.
A devastating fire on Monday engulfed the ‘Yan Katako Market near Gombe’s railway station, causing extensive damage to traders’ stalls and goods. This marks the second fire incident at the market in 2025, heightening fears among local traders and residents about safety and economic stability.
The incident was confirmed in a statement issued on December 15, 2025, by Ismaila Uba Misilli, the Director-General of Media to Gombe State Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya. The governor expressed deep sympathy for the affected traders and shared his concern over the significant losses they suffered, including destroyed shops and personal belongings.
In response, the governor directed the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and other relevant agencies to investigate the cause of the fire promptly and to provide necessary support to those impacted. Firefighters from the Gombe State Fire Service responded swiftly to contain the blaze, assisted by volunteers from Gombe State University, the Federal Fire Service, the Red Cross, security personnel, and members of the public.
During the rescue efforts, an accident involving one of the fire service trucks occurred, resulting in injuries to some personnel. Governor Yahaya prayed for their swift recovery and expressed his commitment to ensuring support for the victims.
Although the government’s statement acknowledged the severity of the incident, it did not specify the financial or material losses incurred. Traders and residents remain concerned about the recurrence of such fires and the apparent lack of adequate safety measures at the market. As investigations continue, many are calling for improved safety protocols to prevent future tragedies and safeguard livelihoods in Gombe’s bustling market community.
