Former House Speaker Questions ADC’s Political Strategy Ahead of 2027 Elections.
Former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, has expressed skepticism about the prospects of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) gaining prominence before the 2027 general elections. He emphasized that unless the party presents clear alternatives and policy ideas that resonate with the Nigerian people, it will not be taken seriously by the electorate or political analysts.
In an interview on ‘Sunday Politics,’ Dogara criticized ADC’s current approach, noting that he has not seen any substantive discussion from the party centered on the concerns of ordinary Nigerians. Instead, he observed that the party’s discourse seems to revolve around anger and opposition without offering constructive solutions. Dogara argued that for ADC to be relevant, it must develop and promote policies that are better than those of the current administration. Only then can they be viewed as a credible alternative.
The opposition coalition adopted ADC as its platform in July 2025, aiming to challenge the ruling party in the upcoming elections. The party boasts a formidable lineup of prominent members, including former Senate President David Mark as national chairman, ex-Minister Rauf Aregbesola as National Secretary, and ex-Minister Bolaji Abdullahi as Publicity Secretary. Notable figures like ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rotimi Amaechi, Nasir El-Rufai, and others are also affiliated with the party.
While ADC has publicly vowed to oust the All Progressives Congress (APC) from power, citing worsening poverty and economic hardship, Dogara cautioned that the party’s leaders must go beyond mere rhetoric. He urged them to develop tangible policies and strategies that can genuinely address Nigeria’s challenges if they hope to be taken seriously in the political arena.
