FRSC Apprehends 7,700 Individuals for Using Counterfeit Number Plates.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has announced a staggering 7,798 arrests over the past two months as part of a heightened initiative to combat offences related to vehicle registration plates.

This increase in arrests is a response to the growing issue of counterfeit number plates, which present serious threats to public safety and national security.

FRSC spokesperson Olusegun Ogungbemide shared these figures in a statement released on Wednesday. The agency’s crackdown on these offences has attracted significant attention, gaining robust support from the National Assembly.

During a meeting on Tuesday between the House of Representatives Committee on FRSC, led by Chairman Abiodun Adesida, and Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed along with committee members, the Assembly pledged its full backing for the initiative. They convened to discuss the worrying rise of fake number plates, which complicate law enforcement efforts and jeopardize road safety.

At this meeting, the Corps Marshal highlighted various strategies being implemented to combat the issue, notably improvements to the National Vehicle Identification Scheme Portal. He underscored that vehicles displaying counterfeit registration numbers would not be allowed on Nigerian roads, despite pushback from some vehicle owners using fakes.

The Corps Marshal also detailed ongoing initiatives aimed at curbing number plate-related violations, pointing out a worrying trend of motorists disregarding the law by using unauthorized plates. “This trend,” he remarked, “poses significant security risks, as it obstructs the ability of security agencies to track vehicles involved in criminal activities.”

The National Assembly’s support for the FRSC’s measures is viewed as a crucial step towards eliminating the circulation of fake number plates. Adesida emphasized the importance of enhanced collaboration between the Assembly and the Corps, calling for stricter laws to ensure accountability for those utilizing counterfeit plates.
