FRSC Urges Motorists to Take Responsibility and Emphasizes Road Safety in 2025 Ember Months Campaign
The Kaduna State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has called on motorists to prioritize their safety in efforts to reduce road traffic accidents across the state.
Speaking at a press briefing on Monday in Kaduna, Corps Commander Tijjani Iliyasu emphasized the importance of individual responsibility in road safety. He read the speech of the FRSC Corps Marshal during the inauguration of the 2025 Ember Months road safety campaign, an annual initiative aimed at promoting safer driving during a period marked by increased travel and traffic.
Iliyasu highlighted that the campaign’s theme for this year is “Take Responsibility for Your Safety: Stop Distracted Driving,” underscoring the critical role of human factors in road crashes. He expressed appreciation for the media’s ongoing support in disseminating road safety messages, noting that their platforms play a vital role in encouraging safer driving behaviors.
The Corps Commander revealed that the 2024 operation zero statistics reported 432 fatalities and 2,070 injuries from 533 road crashes, with causes including driver fatigue, overloading, unsafe practices like carrying passengers in inappropriate vehicles, and transporting fuel in plastic containers. He stressed that the new campaign seeks to address these issues by promoting adherence to traffic rules, speed limits, avoiding driving under the influence, seat belt compliance, and reducing distractions such as cell phone use.
To achieve the campaign’s objectives, Iliyasu announced several measures, including deploying FRSC personnel to major highways and high-risk areas, offering free vehicle inspections, conducting motor park rallies and carnivals, and organizing town hall meetings with transport unions and security agencies. These efforts aim to curb reckless driving, especially during the ember months, and reduce road crashes and fatalities.
He also highlighted recent improvements in driver training standards, fleet compliance, and collaborations with NGOs and civil society groups. Mobile courts have been established to address persistent traffic violations, while the FRSC Annual Lecture Series has been revived to underscore road safety as a critical public health issue and share best practices globally.
Furthermore, Iliyasu disclosed plans to upgrade the driver’s license issuance process, with a new printing facility capable of producing 15,000 licenses daily to clear backlogs by mid-November 2025. A contactless biometric capture system with on-the-spot licensing will soon be introduced to eliminate temporary licenses and streamline the process.
Additionally, preparations are underway for an international conference on road crash victims in Africa, scheduled for November 16-18 in collaboration with the KRSD Road Safety Foundation. The event aims to improve post-crash care and support the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety.
Expressing gratitude for the Federal Government’s support, especially from the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Iliyasu urged Nigerians to continue backing the FRSC’s efforts to foster a safer road environment for all.
