Hamann Criticizes Ronaldo’s Emotional Reaction After Penalty Miss in Euro 2024

Former Germany football star Didi Hamann has criticized Cristiano Ronaldo for his emotional display following a missed penalty during Portugal’s Euro 2024 match against Slovenia.

Ronaldo, 39, missed a crucial penalty in extra time, which was saved by Slovenia’s goalkeeper Jan Oblak, keeping the game goalless. The Portugal captain was visibly emotional at half-time in extra-time, requiring consolation from his teammates.

Despite the initial setback, Portugal triumphed with a 3-0 victory in the penalty shootout, thanks to goalkeeper Diogo Costa’s three saves. Ronaldo managed to convert his subsequent penalty attempt and later apologized to fans for the initial miss.

Hamann, however, was unimpressed by Ronaldo’s tears. Speaking on RTE, Hamann remarked, “A 39-year-old playing 120 minutes, missing a penalty, and then crying on the pitch – it’s embarrassing. I bought into the narrative that Ronaldo had become a team player who needed his team more than before, but tonight he showed his true colors.”

Hamann continued, “After missing the penalty, he started crying at half-time in extra-time. It’s not about him. There’s a squad of 26 players, a support staff, and thousands of fans in the stadium. It’s about the team, not just one player.”
