Former Super Eagles coach, Augustine Eguavoen, remains optimistic about Nigeria’s chances of securing a spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, despite the team’s current challenges in the qualifiers.
Eguavoen, who briefly stepped in to lead the national team following the resignation of Finidi George, believes the road to qualification is tough but not impossible. His comments come at a crucial time, as Nigeria finds itself under pressure after a rocky start in the qualifying campaign.
The 59-year-old tactician, who also helped the team secure qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), handed over to Eric Chelle, the newly appointed head coach. Now, Chelle is tasked with reviving the Super Eagles’ World Cup hopes.
As it stands, Nigeria sits in fourth place in their qualification group, trailing behind teams they were expected to outpace. This position leaves little room for error. To stand any chance of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup, the Super Eagles must win all their remaining matches. This includes both home and away games against tough opponents, where every point will count.
Speaking to ACL Sports, Eguavoen urged the team and fans to stay hopeful and focused.
“It’s a tough challenge, but it’s still possible. With the talent in the team and support from Nigerians, I believe we can do it. I’m 100% sure because the players are eager to play at the World Cup.
I’m not focusing on the last game. The goal now is to take it one game at a time and treat each match like a final.”
His message underscores the need for mental resilience, tactical discipline, and national support. For Nigeria to make a comeback, it will take more than just skill—it will require a unified team spirit, strategic leadership from Coach Chelle, and consistent performances from key players like Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, and Wilfred Ndidi.
Eguavoen’s belief reflects the faith many Nigerians still have in the Super Eagles. While the path to qualification is narrow, it’s not closed. With renewed focus, improved team chemistry, and strong fan backing, the Super Eagles could yet soar to the 2026 World Cup stage.
