IG Egbetokun Denies Bias in Police Promotions, Reaffirms Merit-Based Process
The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has dismissed claims of bias and irregularities regarding the Nigeria Police Force’s recent promotion exercises. He affirmed that all promotions under his leadership have been conducted strictly based on merit, transparency, and adherence to established procedures.
During the decoration ceremony for newly promoted senior officers at the Force Headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday, the IG stated that attempts by some to undermine the integrity of the process are unfounded and intended to erode public confidence in the Force.
Egbetokun emphasized, “In recent months, there have been efforts by certain mischief-makers to cast doubt on the credibility of our promotion process, especially concerning the accelerated promotion exercise conducted recently. However, truth stands taller than rumors. The Nigeria Police Force has nothing to hide or defend.”
He reiterated that every promotion conducted during his administration, including the accelerated exercise, strictly followed due process, transparency, and merit-based standards. “There is no special promotion standard in the Nigeria Police Force,” he declared. “Our system rewards diligence, professionalism, and proven capacity, not favoritism or tribal sentiments.”
The IG stressed that promotions are solely based on competence, performance, and discipline, reinforcing that these principles underpin the Force’s career management philosophy. “This approach motivates excellence, boosts morale, and restores public trust,” he added.
Egbetokun, who decorated officers including Deputy Inspectors-General, Assistant Inspectors-General, and Commissioners of Police, described the event as a reaffirmation of integrity, excellence, and dedicated service within the Force.
He congratulated the promoted officers, noting that their elevation recognizes their discipline, patriotism, and consistency. He reminded them that higher ranks come with greater responsibilities. “Every insignia at this level should symbolize purpose — a reminder that authority is meaningful only when it uplifts the institution and enhances public confidence,” he said.
The IG urged senior officers to adopt community and intelligence-led policing strategies to address emerging crimes driven by technological and global trends. “The Nigerian people expect a smarter, more responsive Force that is deeply connected to communities. Harness technology, empower personnel, and innovate to stay ahead of criminal threats,” he advised.
He also commended President Bola Tinubu for his ongoing support of police reforms and praised the Police Service Commission for maintaining transparency and collaboration in the promotion process.
Notably, on October 17, the Police Service Commission approved the promotion of CP Abibo Reuben from Commissioner to Assistant Inspector-General of Police. Additionally, 11 Deputy Commissioners of Police were promoted to substantive Commissioners, among other advancements.
