The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has issued a strong warning to officers within the Nigeria Police Force regarding the unlawful and excessive detention of suspects. He emphasized that suspects should not be held beyond the legally permitted time frames, stating that any officer found violating these regulations will face severe disciplinary action.
Egbetokun highlighted that improper detentions undermine the public’s trust and confidence in the police, urging officers to carry out their responsibilities with professionalism, integrity, and respect for human rights.
In a statement released on Sunday by Force spokesman Muyiwa Adejobi, the IG stressed the importance of adhering to the constitutional rights guaranteed to individuals, particularly those outlined in Sections 34 and 35 of the Nigerian Constitution, which protect human dignity and personal liberty. He remarked, “The IGP has reminded all members of the Nigeria Police Force about the critical need to respect fundamental rights within the context of pre-trial detentions. Observing legally mandated detention timelines is both a legal requirement and essential for upholding individual dignity and rights.”
Egbetokun cautioned against practices that could result in unlawful or prolonged detentions, reinforcing that violations would have serious repercussions and calling for a culture of accountability within the Force. He encouraged officers to maintain the highest standards of conduct in their dealings with the public.
Adejobi reaffirmed the current police leadership’s commitment to human rights while enforcing law and order. He stated, “The Nigeria Police Force is dedicated to ensuring that all individuals in custody are treated with respect and in compliance with the law.
