INEC to Hold By-Elections on August 16

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that it will conduct by-elections across various constituencies on Saturday, August 16, 2025. These by-elections are intended to fill vacant legislative seats at both the national and state levels, which have become unoccupied due to a range of factors, including resignations, deaths, and court-ordered annulments of previous elections.

INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, made the disclosure during a consultative meeting with leaders of registered political parties held in Abuja on Thursday. He explained that the Commission is fully committed to ensuring that the affected constituencies are not left without representation for long, hence the need to conduct the by-elections promptly.

Prof. Yakubu further emphasized that the by-elections will be conducted in strict compliance with the electoral timetable and guidelines, while reiterating the Commission’s commitment to transparency, credibility, and fairness in the electoral process. He also called on political parties to conduct peaceful and issue-based campaigns, and to abide by the rules of engagement as outlined in the Electoral Act.

INEC is expected to publish the detailed timetable and schedule of activities for the by-elections in the coming days, including dates for party primaries, submission of candidate lists, and voter education initiatives.
