Jihadist Militants Attack 14 Churches in Enugu, Killing Over 100 Worshipers.
The International Society for Civil Liberties and Rule of Law (Intersociety) has reported that, over the past four years, at least 14 churches in Enugu State have been attacked by armed Jihadists, resulting in the deaths of at least 117 worshipers. The attacks occurred between May 2021 and June 2025, predominantly in Eha-Amufu, Isi-Uzo Local Government Area. The majority of targeted churches were Anglican, with two Catholic churches also affected.
Intersociety’s report, signed by its chairman Emeka Umeagbalasi and other officials, accused South-East governors of denying the presence of “killer herders,” despite mounting evidence of violent incursions by militants. The group highlighted a growing infiltration of the region by Jihadist Fulani militants, citing recent field investigations.
Among the notable incidents was the May 2021 attack on Holy Anglican Church in Okpokwu, which left 25 worshipers dead. In January 2022, coordinated raids on seven church parishes resulted in over 55 deaths. Several other assaults targeted Anglican and Catholic churches across Eha-Amufu between 2023 and 2025. The most recent attacks occurred in June 2025, targeting Victory Anglican Church and Our Savior Anglican Church in Iyi-Asaa, along with St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Ikpakpara, which collectively claimed 31 lives.
In total, Intersociety estimates that 117 worshipers have been killed in these attacks over four years. The rights group called for urgent intervention from both the Nigerian government and the international community to address the violence and protect religious communities.
As of now, neither the Enugu State Government nor security agencies have responded publicly to the allegations. The situation underscores ongoing concerns over religious violence and insecurity in Nigeria’s southeastern region.
