Kano Custodial Officers Prevent Illicit Substance Entry, Arrest Young Man.
The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) Kano State Command has successfully thwarted an attempt to smuggle illicit drugs into a custodial facility at Kano High Court. A 20-year-old man was arrested for allegedly trying to smuggle Indian hemp inside a loaf of bread to an inmate during court proceedings.
According to a statement released on Thursday by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, CSC Musbahu Lawan-Kofarnasarawa, the suspect, a resident of Tishama Hotoro Quarters in Kano, was intercepted by officers from the Goron Dutse Custodial Centre. The arrest occurred while inmates were being escorted to court for their hearings. Authorities discovered the suspect had concealed a substance suspected to be Indian hemp within the bread, intending to pass it to an inmate during the court session.
The Command’s Controller of Corrections, Ado Inuwa, directed that the suspect be handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and possible prosecution. Inuwa also commended the vigilance and professionalism of officers, especially the Officer-in-Charge of the Goron Dutse Custodial Centre, ACC Kafilu Abdullahi, and his team, for their role in preventing the infiltration of drugs into the facility.
Reaffirming the Nigerian Correctional Service’s commitment, Inuwa emphasized the importance of maintaining secure and drug-free custodial environments across Kano State. He urged members of the public, particularly parents and guardians, to caution their wards against engaging in criminal activities that threaten community safety.
This incident is part of ongoing efforts by the NCoS to curb crime and prevent illicit substances from entering correctional facilities. The Command previously reported similar attempts to smuggle drugs, demonstrating its unwavering dedication to ensuring the safety and integrity of the correctional system in Kano State.
