Kano Politicians Advocate for Governor Yusuf’s Exit from NNPP Amid Internal Crises.
Members of the Kano State House of Assembly have unanimously backed Governor Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf’s planned move to defect from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The lawmakers believe that remaining in the NNPP poses significant legal risks due to ongoing internal disputes and court cases that threaten the party’s stability.
The assembly members cited the political crisis experienced in Zamfara State, where the governor lost control of the party because of unresolved leadership struggles and judicial rulings. They warned that Kano could face a similar fate if the NNPP’s internal crisis is not addressed promptly.
Speaking to journalists on Thursday, the Majority Leader, Lawan Hussaini, expressed concern over the legal dangers facing the NNPP. He pointed out that a court judgment recognizes a faction of the party, creating uncertainty about its leadership and the legitimacy of its candidates for future elections. Hussaini warned that the ongoing factional battles and court cases could potentially invalidate the party’s nominations, even after elections are conducted.
He highlighted that Zamfara’s experience serves as a cautionary tale, illustrating how internal disputes can undermine electoral victories and jeopardize political mandates. Drawing from this precedent, the Kano lawmakers support the idea of Governor Yusuf and Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement, leaving the NNPP for a more stable platform like the APC.
Hussaini revealed that the assembly members are already in talks with Yusuf and Kwankwaso to facilitate a “strategic and timely” defection, aimed at safeguarding their electoral mandates and political futures. The move, they believe, is necessary to prevent history from repeating itself and to ensure political stability in Kano.
