Kano State Inaugurates Reconstituted Council of Emirs Led by Emir Sanusi II.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has officially inaugurated the reconstituted Kano Council of Emirs, marking a significant step in strengthening the traditional leadership structure. The newly formed council is headed by Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II as chairman, with the Emirs of Gaya, Karaye, and Rano serving as members. The announcement was made on Monday through a statement from the governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.
The inauguration followed the governor’s approval of the Kano Emirates Council Law (Repeal Bill) 2024, which dissolved the five emirates established by the previous administration under Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje. This move aims to streamline the traditional institution, ensuring it functions more effectively in promoting peace, stability, and development across Kano.
Speaking at the event held at the Coronation Hall of the Government House, Governor Yusuf emphasized that the traditional institution remains a vital pillar of Kano’s identity. He described it as a guardian of cultural values, a custodian of heritage, and a crucial partner in governance, social stability, and progress. The governor reiterated that the council would serve as a central platform for traditional rulers to meet, deliberate, and provide counsel on issues affecting the welfare of the people.
Deputy Governor Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo expressed optimism that the council would play a pivotal role in the overall development of Kano State. Additionally, Professor Tijjani Muhammad Naniya, Special Adviser on Chieftaincy Affairs, highlighted the historical significance of the emirate system, noting that the current structure restores a 700-year-old tradition of a united emirate system headed by the Emir of Kano.
Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II praised the government’s efforts, describing the revival as timely and aligned with Kano’s rich history. He reaffirmed the commitment of the emirates to contribute to the state’s progress under the new arrangement.
